Montjuic in Barcelona!

January 14, 2011

Montjuic is one of the most fabulous places to spend time in Barcelona. Montjuic is a small mountain and its name means “Jewish Mountain”, which comes from the fact that it houses a Jewish Cementery. Tha Montjuic park covers most of the mountain and it includes a castle, where an outdoor cinema is installed, the botanical garden of Barcelona, most of the 1992 Olympic facilities – including the Olympic Stadium, the swimming pools, and the Palau Sant Jordi which is now used as a concert hall-, the Fira de Barcelona tradefair facilities and the Poble Espanyol (a medieval theme shopping area).

A visit to Montjuïc would include the following landmarks:

Arriving to Montjuïc from Plaza España, the first thing getting your attraction would be the twin tall venetian towers locating at Maria Cristina Avenue, and built for the World Expo Barcelona 1929. Also, you’ll find facilities from Fira de Barcelona en Plaza España, that hosts important events and congresses in Barcelona.

Montjuïc Magic Fountain: also instaled for the World Expo Barcelona 1929. This beautiful fountain offers a very special show with lights and colors and water “dancing” following the  rhythm of farely popular songs. We strongly suggest you to check Montjuïc Magic Fountain schedule, before visiting it, as it varies following the different stations of the year.

The “Spanish Town”Poble Espanyol in Barcelona represents a castle and inside of it there are several shops (selling mainly handcrafted products). There are also a few cafeterias and small bars in Poble Espanyol, as well as a club named Discotheque.

One of the main facilities built for Barcelona’s Olympic Games 1992 Palau Sant Jordi. This i place s a covered pavillion, distinguished for being very functional building that can host either sports events (such as tennis and basketball games) as well as musical shows.

Museum of the National Art of Catalonia: Located at National Palace building, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña (MNAC) has a great collection of pictures, sculpture and other arts manifestations, from the medieval era until half of XX century.

which is an antique militar fortress, that nowadays is the Militar Museum. Fron this place you’ll see some of the best views of Barcelona’s port.

Teatre Grec in Barcelona: the greek theater of Montjuïc is another of the buildings made for the World Expo of 1929. Every year, during the months of june, july and august, the Festival Grec de Barcelona (Barcelona’s Greek Festival) is celebrated, having the theater as its main venue.

Mies Van der Rohe pavillion: This is the German pavillion for World Expo 1929, designed by the famous architech Mies Van del Rohe and built in glass, steel and marble, that has inspired the following generations of architechs. Inside this pavillion you’ll find the mythical Barcelona chair from Mies Van der Rohe.

It is possible to rent apartaments in Barcelona in Sants-Montjuic district, which is the nearest location to Montjuic.
